About Museum |
Šlokenbeka, one of the beautiful manors in Latvia, is located in Milzkalne, Tukums district, 60 km from Riga.
It is the only medieval fortified manor that has remained in the Baltic countries until the present day.
The first written evidence of the Šlokenbeka Manor dates back to 1484. The Manor was built by Werner von Butler, the vassal of the German Order near the road from Riga to Prussia. The Šlokenbeka Manor was built as a closed structure. Buildings were joined by a fortification wall with loopholes. The yard was accessible through fortified gates. In case of attack Šlokenbeka served as a refuge for the noblemen of Tukums.
The Šlokenbeka Manor has been reconstructed several times, and new buildings have been added, as in the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, when it lost its functions of a military foothold, the Manor was adapted for economic activity.
In the 18th century fast development of agricultural activities took place in the Manor. The main business was the production of spirit and beer, though domestic animals were also bred in the Manor.
Until the year 1920 the Manor belonged to the family of baron von der Reke. After that the Šlokenbeka Manor became a state property.
In 1957 it was taken over by road sector organisations which later started to reconstruct and restore the Manor.
The reconstructed Šlokenbeka Manor became the home for the Latvian Road Museum.
On September 5, 2001, the Latvian Road Museum became accredited as an official state museum and acquired museum certificate.
The Latvian Road Museum is the most diverse museum both in Europe and all over the world.
